The social side didnât interest me much, and I was more focused on getting ahead in life. That was far more important to me at that stage. Because of this, I was also completing professional qualifications alongside my degree, and before I had finished at Uni, I was qualified as an investment manager with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), and as a financial adviser with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). When I came to finishing the Masters, it had become clear to me that I needed to have full control over my future, and therefore a career at a big firm was not for me. I had a conversation with my father and brother that would change the course of my life. My brother had just come out of PWC as a Chartered Tax Adviser and started working with my father, who had a small accountancy and financial advisory business. We as a family took the decision that my brother would take over the accountancy firm, and I would take over the financial advisory side, allowing my father to step back from the day-to-day business operations, and enable us to inject some fresh energy and ideas into the business. We quickly rebranded the firm, and set-up a law firm to complement our accountancy and financial advisory activities. This was only possible because the rules changed in 2012, allowing non-lawyers to own a law firm. During this time I also obtained regulatory permission for the financial advisory business to manage investments. These two developments allowed us to serve clients internally across a number of areas, which was, and I believe still is, something unique in the UK. The new group is called Prydis. Since 2012, we have grown the business six-fold, with 75 staff and four offices. I have also moved our investment management activities into a separate company, P1 Investment Management. P1 serves not only our clients, but also the clients of other financial advisory firms. The bottom line is, this is really, really hard. We all know business owners who have gone out of business. We all know people who have lost their jobs. We all know people who have been in a job search for over a year. If there is a light at the end of the tunnel it sure seems really dim, or like a pinhole. In a Yahoo Group Im on someone said that this is the worst shes seen since the Great Depression I agree with that but there are a few differences. Here was my response to her email. I hope this can give you hope I didnt plan on sharing on this blog when I wrote it, but its been on my mind all night/morning: Individual greatness has and will come from this, however. For me, one of the greatest things I think I can see from this is that people start to consider their careers differently it is no longer the companys to manage, it is MINE. What can I do to have some kind of income security? As people go through this paradigm shift well see the evolution of the career it has to happen weve been forced into it (by virtue of lack of loyalty between employers and employees) now the economy is forcing us to really, really address it. Anyone want to trust their career to HR? Maybe a few years ago, but many people now are getting it. Its a hard lesson, for sure, but I think well see a more empowered workforce come out of this. Chris Brogan recently wrote in his newsletter that there might not be a lot of jobs out there, but there is a TON of money can we, as personal career managers, start to think about how to create income security (as opposed to job security) by earning some of that money? If so, then well see a terrific product when all the dust settles. It might be a crappy economy, but that doesnt mean we have to let that dictate what happens to US! Retool and conquer! In her thrilling TED Talk âYour Elusive Creative Geniusâ (see below), writer Elizabeth Gilbert, author of EAT, PRAY, LOVE and BIG MAGIC, describes an interview with the poet Ruth Stone. Gilbert, insatiably curious about the roots of inspiration, asked Stone where her poems come from. Stone described her early experience working in the fields in rural Virginia and hearing a poem coming at her across the landscape like a âthunderous train of air.â When she felt inspiration barreling down on her this way, she had no choice but to run like hell for the house for paper and pen. If she was not quick enough, the poem would continue across the landscape without her, looking for another poet. On some occasions Stone nearly missed the poem, but was able to snatch it by the tail, reel it back in, and transcribe it on the page perfectly intact, but in reverse. Great ideas, whether Ruth Stoneâs poetry, Elon Muskâs Tesla car or a Marie Curieâs groundbreaking scientific discoveries, are out there waiting to be found. They offer themselves not to the highest bidder, but to the most industrious and attentive one. April Oliver My first novel, APRIL OLIVER, took ten years and many drafts to write. A second novel, currently in a drawer awaiting a fresh look, took five years. My third novel came to me in Ruth Stone fashion. I looked over my shoulder, saw it hurtling toward me out of the blue, and lifted my mitt just in time. A miracle, since I am a bad catch! Though it is significantly longer than my previous books, I wrote the first draft in less than a year. It came in one massive download, my only job to get it on paper before it escaped. Ruth Stone, Elon Musk and Marie Curie surely had periods of trial and error, countless hours honing their skills and their imaginations. On their way to mastery, they no doubt clocked the 10,000 hours of hard practice discussed in Malcolm Gladwellâs book, OUTLIERS. But in the course of this apprenticeship, they did not mire themselves in pre-conceived ideas of what they were after. Their minds were simultaneously focused and nimble, open enough to spot unexpected ideas awaiting discovery. Inviting Inspiration Throwing your doors open to inspirationâ"whether professional, artistic, scientific or whateverâ"requires two steps: Hunker down, hone your skills and put in your 10,000+ hours of hard-core practice. And I mean hard-core. Employ as many constraints as possible. Be like Steph Curry, the best 3-point shooter in NBA history, who rather than rest on his laurels, continues to practice with multiple mind-boggling constraints, such as vision-impairing goggles and multiple balls. If you decide you have âarrivedâ and no longer need to improve your skills, inspiration will look for someone hungrier. At the same time that you are hunkered down, straighten up and look around. Be aware of your peripheral vision. Though bent over her hoe in that rural Virginia field, Ruth Stone kept an ear out for that âthunderous burst of airâ that fueled her poems. Donât let the static of your inner chatter cut off your awareness. You never know what crazy, unexpected ideas may be careering your way. Keep your mitt open to make the catch. Just last week I had a stranger asking me about IT jobs in the Middle East (even though I mostly recruit in the UK right now and a bit in NYC) or another one requesting I tell him about VP jobs in Scandinavia â" seriously? I donât even know you and I get up to 40 requests a day â" donât expect me to do your job for you when you clearly havenât bothered to check what kind of recruitment I do. So how do you make it easy for others to help you? Be specific about what youre looking for The more specific you are about exactly what youre looking for, the easier it will be for your contact to remember. You need to be specific about what you want but also what youâre like them to do. Im looking for a job. isnt going to get you anywhere. But if you say Im looking for a Finance Manager position in e-commerce industry, who do you know that might know something about that or put me in touch with someone who would know? Your contact is more likely to remember about you when they hear of a relevant opportunity, than when you simply tell them youâre looking for a job. Have reasonable expectations Only ask about something your contact is actually able to do. If your best friend is an Admin Assistant in a big company donât expect him or her to recommend you to the CEO. Ask yourself whatâs in it for them as well. Take control of the follow-up Your contacts are doing you a favour by recommending you to others or telling you about jobs, so donât rely on them to remember to follow up with you. Your job search isnât priority to them and people will often forget or put off what youâve asked them to do especially if theyâre really busy. How to Take Your 401k With You When Switching Jobs Switching jobs can be an exciting â" but difficult â" time. When youâre changing companies or positions, you have a lot you need to get used to. From a new commute to a new set of job duties, you have a lot of changes going on in your life. Itâs easy to feel overwhelmed. One of the areas that may be overwhelming you is your 401k. Depending on how long youâve worked with the company, you may have established a pretty sizeable retirement fund during your time in the office. You donât want to see that money disappear. There are a few things you can do to ensure the 401k is taken care of after you leave. Letâs consider what your options are and when you may want to consider each. Understanding Your 401k While the money in the account is yours for retirement, the account itself technically doesnât belong to you. When you create a 401k with an employer, youâre not able to carry that same account with you as you go from job to job. The 401k account is linked to the company â" not to you. This can make it a bit difficult when you switch jobs. Because youâre unable to take your old 401k to your new job, you need to transfer the money from one account to another. While you can leave the money in the account, it wonât be active, so neither you or your employer will be making contributions. This means youâre missing out on potential growth. Additionally, having money in many different accounts can be confusing and difficult to manage. To ensure youâre getting the most of your retirement fund, you want to keep it all in one safe place. Your past employer may also have rules for what they do with a 401k that has been left behind by an employee who has moved on from the company. They may automatically roll the money into an IRA for you, or the money may be automatically cashed out â" depending on the amount you have saved. Before you make any decisions, itâs important to talk with someone at your old office to know which practices are in use. Youâll want to know if and when they make an automatic decision, so you can be properly prepared. Moving a 401k When preparing to switch jobs, you have two main options for transferring your 401k account. First, you can simply roll the money over into the new 401k account youâve established with your new employer. Keep in mind that this account will have the same rules as your last account. If you should leave this job, you will need to transfer the money again. You also have the option of putting the money into an IRA. An IRA, short for Individual Retirement Arrangement, is a different type of retirement fund that allows you to save money for retirement without an employer-sponsored account. This means you do not need to continuously move your money if you switch jobs. There are different benefits of each. Whether you create a new 401k or open an IRA will depend on your unique situation. Hereâs a closer look at what each includes and when they should be used. When Should You Roll Into a New 401k? If youâre going to a new company that offers a 401k, you may want to consider rolling your old plan into your new plan. When you make the decision to roll your old 401k into a new 401k, youâre keeping all your money in one place. This can allow you to make better management decisions and keep an eye on the growth. However, transferring a 401k to a new account can have high fees youâll need to pay. While moving the money into a new account can allow you to keep your funds in one place, it may not be worth it if the fees will eat away at a large chunk of what youâve saved. This is especially the case if you plan on moving jobs again soon. Rolling your funds into a new 401k can make sense when itâs a seemingly one-time move with fees that wonât take away the majority of your savings. If youâre not a job hopper, you may want to consider just moving your money into a new 401k with your company. But, if youâre frequently looking for new employment, always transferring your 401k could leave you without much money when retirement comes. Whether or not a 401k option is right for you will also depend on the offerings your new employer is giving you. Because the employer can control the funds you invest in, some plans may not give you the flexibility youâre after. However, if the company youâre moving to has a great retirement compensation plan, you may want to consider moving your 401k to a new account. It is also important to note that money within a 401k is protected against both bankruptcy and lawsuits. This means if youâre ever facing bankruptcy or are being sued, the court cannot go after your money in a 401k â" which isnât the case with an IRA. This can seriously protect your retirement if you ever find yourself in an unfortunate position. When Should You Roll Into an IRA? IRAs can be a bit more difficult than a 401k, simply because there are many different kinds of IRAs out there. If youâre looking to roll over your 401k money into an IRA, you would be looking at creating a traditional IRA because of the taxation rules. Like a 401k, money in a traditional IRA is taxed when the funds are taken out. Because funds must stay within the same tax status, you would be unable to move the funds into a Roth IRA. A traditional IRA is a great option for people who frequently change jobs. Because an IRA is connected to you â" not the company â" you do not need to move the money each time you change jobs. Instead, you can simply transfer that companyâs 401k fund into your already established IRA, treating it somewhat like a deposit pool. With an IRA, youâre also in charge of where you invest your money. Because your employer is not connected to the account, they cannot dictate which stocks you invest in. This allows you to have more flexibility in playing with the stock market, or permitting you to invest in companies you enjoy and care about. However, opening an IRA typically means youâll be left with more than one retirement fund. If you have both your IRA and your 401k with your new company, youâll have multiple accounts to manage. If youâre capable of overseeing both, this shouldnât create too much of a problem. It is also important to note that your employer typically wonât contribute to your IRA. While there may be some outlying situations, employers will traditionally want you to follow the retirement account plans theyâve established. This means only you will be funding your IRA. Your IRA is also not protected from bankruptcy or lawsuits. If you have substantial debt or youâve been sued, you may need to pay off fines and fees with the money in your IRA. If you could potentially face either of these situations, you may want to consider a 401k instead of an IRA. How to Roll Your 401k Over into a IRA or New 401k Account Once youâve decided which is the right option for you, itâs time to roll the money over. Whether you choose to move the money into a new 401k or an IRA, youâll want to begin by getting your new account established. If youâre moving your money to a new 401k, talk with your new employer about what needs to happen to get your new account open. They should be able to assist you in getting your new 401k account ready shortly after you begin your new position. For those opting for an IRA, youâll want to contact a bank of your choice to open the account. Traditional investment banks like Vanguard and Fidelity can both provide some IRA options for you. Once you have your new account open, contact the bank housing your old 401k. Simply let them know youâd like to roll over your old account and provide them with the information they need to make that happen. In most circumstances, this can be done over the phone. However, keep in mind that there is a difference between rolling the account over and account distribution. When you roll the account over, you should not need to pay taxes on the money. Make it clear to the individual you speak with that youâre not looking to distribute the account. Itâs difficult to say whether or not you should move your money to a 401k or to an IRA. Each situation has its benefits and drawbacks, so itâs important to weigh them against your unique circumstances. Consider which can bring you the most benefits, and follow that path.
